Aran Islands Sweaters
You simply can’t visit the Aran Islands and leave without taking home your very own Aran Sweater, so be sure to pop into Aran Islands Sweaters!
Owned by Rosemary Faherty and her husband Andrew, who are 8 generation Islanders, Aran Islands Sweaters showcases the true art of knitting which was passed down to Rosemary from her mother, which had been passed to her by the previous generations. An Aran jumper is distinguished by their use of complex textured stitch patterns, several of which are combined in the creation of a single garment. Each Aran garment exudes history and every stitch pattern has a traditional interpretation and distinctive story, often of religious significance, but mostly of life’s experience and journey; for example, the honeycomb stitch pattern is a symbol of the hard-working bee, while the diamond stitch is a wish of success, wealth and treasure.
Situated within a beautiful traditional thatch cottage at the base of Dun Aengus Fort on Inis Mór, the Aran Islands Sweaters shop known as “An Tuirne” meaning “The Spinning Wheel”, is a must visit!
