The Twin Spires statue was commissioned by NUI Galway to mark the opening of the Arts Millennium Building in 2000.
The inspiration for this sculpture, sculpted by John Behan, came from the following lines from Patrick Kavanagh’s poem “Sanctity”: “To be a poet and not know the trade. To be a lover and repel all women. Twin ironies by which great saints are made. The agonising pincer jaws of heaven”.
